India is home to almost 24 percent of the world’s spindles, and 8 percent of the world’s rotors, making it the world’s second largest producer of cotton and silk, and also the second largest textile manufacturer. In addition to this, India also enjoys a relative advantage with regard to an abundance of skilled labor and comparative low cost in production over the other major textile producers. This had made India a preferred destination for investment.
The introduction of the Internet and e-commerce has facilitated the potential to employ skills of local artisans along with the local textiles and help them promote their products internationally. Thus, building a global brand.
During his visit to Varanasi, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said “Textile sector gives employment to poorest of the poor. All sections of the society are integrated in this sector”. He also pitched for global up gradation of the sector by stating that “A huge global e-commerce market awaits our textile sector. It is up to us to harness this opportunity and take Indian textile sector to a global scale”
In recent months a number of textile giants, like Arvind Retail and Raymond have jumped the ecommerce brand wagon, even ecommerce major Flipkart, has signed a MOU with the office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, whereby they would be listing products from rural Indian handloom weavers and craftsmen on its platform. Many apparel retailers Zara and Mango (both from Spain), Promod (France), Benetton (Italy), Esprit, Levi’s and Forever 21 have already invested in India.
With so much happening in the textile industry, what is stopping the local textiles, artisans from taking the ecommerce platform? A number of companies are now offering a readymade ecommerce platform which can be easily integrated into the business. You need not shut shop on your brick and mortar store, you can just start an extension and explore a wider and global market. You can even have an international market for your products.
